What is Dalfampridine?
Dalfampridine
is a potassium channel blocker used to help multiple sclerosis patients to
improve body imbalance and help in walking.
How does Dalfampridine work?
In multiple
sclerosis the nerves are progressively demyelinated which exposes potassium
channels. Due to this there is a leak of potassium which results in distortion
of signals throughout the nerves. This results delay in signals and impairment
of neuromuscular transmission.
Dalfampridine
inhibits voltage-gated potassium channels in the Central Nerves System to
maintain the transmembrane potential and prolong action potential. In simple
language, dalfampridine works to make sure that the signal available is high
enough to stimulate conduction in demyelinated nerves that are exposed in MS
patients.
